Unable to lock the disk. Boot your computer from a linux-based media
I have recently upgraded my ATI 2019 to 2020. With OS Windows 10 Pro 64. Whenever I try to recover whole partition using Acronis Bootable Media, Acronis window gives me error “Unable to lock the disk. Boot your computer from a Linux-based bootloader media”. Shutting down while holding the shift key with no success.
Mehr, there are various opinions of this annoying issue!
Creating and using the Acronis Linux based rescue media does work as Linux ignores whatever in the file system from Windows is holding a lock on the disk drive.
Other users say that retrying the recovery multiple times, i.e. 3 or 4 or more, can cause ATI to be able to lock the disk and proceed with the recovery.
Personally, I have one system where I have hit this recently and only the Linux media will get past the error message!

Dear Steve, thank you for your reply. Using linux-based bootable media, it did not detect pc partitions, and only external hard drives are available as destination partitions. I have gathered the log.
Lastly I created a ticket for this issue.
What type of PC partitions / internal disk drive are not being detected by the Linux media?
The only other method that I know will work when this lock issue is encountered is to use the ‘Add new disk’ option in the WinPE rescue media, selecting the correct target drive and setting this to the correct partition format (GPT or MBR) then leaving the drive as unformatted. This will then not have any locks to prevent ATI from restoring the disk backup to it.
The key downside to doing this is that you have to recover the whole disk, so cannot use this approach to just restore a single partition!

Thank you very much Steve. Yes selecting «add new disk» resolved the issue.
I am currently facing this issue. Windows 10. When running recovery, I select the drive and right click and select Recovery
I then select Disk 1 and verify all others below are checked. Click next, and I get the above error message.
I have tried to add a new disk, but that does not resolve the issue. Instead I am just getting the same error message.
This happened on multiple computers.

Sorry but need to start from the beginning here with your issue.
What exactly are you trying to do and how are you trying to do it?
What are you trying to recover, are you trying to do this from within Windows, or are you booting your computer using Acronis Rescue Media? If the latter, which type of rescue media are you using?
Are you recovering to the same / original drive the backup was made from, or to a different drive? If the latter, is the different drive of the same size as the original? What size of data is being restored?

Not sure why this thread died, but I am having this issue right now with TI2021.
I created a brand new TI2021 boot media DVD disk using the simple method. I rebooted to the DVD, which gave me the option to run TI. I selected clone disk, and then selected my SSD EVO 850 (500GB) as my source drive. I waited for a bit and it came back with the error described in this thread («Unable to lock the disk. Boot your computer from a Linux-based bootable media and try again.»).
So it appears this issue has walked over from TI2020 to TI2021. Yes, I know I can clone a disk under Windows, but I wanted to use the tools TI provides and take the opportunity to get a clean clone without other stuff going on with Windows.
Apparently I can’t. I don’t have any Linux based stuff, so I guess I am dead in the water on this. Anyone at Acronis looked into this since 2020 version?
Now I am actually scared I could not recover my system should I ever need to.
Craig, have you read through and tried the suggestions in the earlier posts in this topic?
The source disk can be ‘locked’ for various reasons including by booting into the Acronis Rescue Media when the PC has not been fully shutdown, i.e. is in a hybrid sleep state akin to hibernation. Doing a full shutdown by pressing / holding down a Shift key when clicking on Shutdown may help resolve this issue.
What are you cloning to here? Is this a disk drive that already contains a previous clone of the OS, if so, then wiping that target disk before doing a new clone can be helpful or else using the option in the Rescue Media > Tools > Add new disk and selecting the correct partition scheme (GPT or MBR) to match the source disk drive.
The Linux based rescue media can be created via the Advanced option of the Rescue Media Builder tool and doesn’t require any Linux knowledge or skills. It is the media that ATI was using from the beginning with version 7.0 but they are now moving away from since 2018 in favour of using Windows PE media, in line with their competitors.
If you are concerned about being able to recover, then I would strongly recommend using Backup and Recovery over using Cloning. Making regular Backups from within Windows using the scheduler is going to give you many more recovery options than doing an occasional clone, plus Backup is far more economical in disk storage needs. I can store perhaps as many as a dozen backup images on a single disk drive versus only having one clone copy! При клонировании Windows 10 (установленной на жёсткий диск стиля MBR) в программе Acronis True Image 2017 на компьютер с включенным UEFI, программа Acronis автоматически преобразует целевой HDD или SSD в стиль GPT
Для примера будем клонировать Windows 10, установленную на моём компьютере.
Управление дисками нашего компьютера.
В системном блоке имеется два накопителя (обычный HDD и SSD) оба стиля MBR. В БИОСе интерфейс UEFI отключен.
Диск 0 (объём 500 Гб), на нём находится Диск (C:) с установленной Windows 10.
Оба жёстких диска стиля MBR.
Перезагружаемся, входим в БИОС и включаем интерфейс UEFI. Е сли вы не знаете как это сделать, то поможет эта статья.
После этого загружаем компьютер с загрузочной флешки Acronis True Image 2016-17.
Выбираем «Инструменты и утилиты».
Выбираем Режим клонирования «Автоматический» и жмём «Далее».
Для подтверждения удаления всех данных на целевом SSD жмите «ОК».
Здесь самое интересное. Так как мы включили в БИОСе интерфейс UEFI, то программа Acronis True Image 2017 предупреждает нас о том, что выбранный целевой SSD будет преобразован в структуру GPT, которая сделает этот диск загрузочным.
Важное замечание : Загрузочная флешка должна быть создана в активированной (то есть купленной) версии Acronis True Image 2017, в противном случае на этом этапе вас будет ждать такая ошибка.
Начинается операция клонирования Windows 10 с обычного жёсткого диска на твердотельный накопитель, при этом происходит автоматическая конвертация SSD в стиль GPT.
Загружается Windows 10.
Идём в Управление дисками и видим созданный на твердотельном накопителе скрытый раздел «Исправен (Шифрованный (EFI) системный раздел)» FAT32, содержащий файлы конфигурации загрузки Windows 10. Данный раздел создаётся только в операционных системах UEFI, установленных на диск GPT.
Смотрим свойства твердотельного накопителя с установленной OS и видим, что диск имеет стиль GPT.
Исходный же диск 500 Гб так и остался в стиле MBR.

Cloning error «unable to lock the dynamic disk».
I installed ATI on my Windows 10 laptop and created a bootable thumb drive using the media builder. I inserted the thumb drive into my desktop computer and attempted to use it to clone the HDD in that computer to an SSD, but I keep getting the error «unable to lock the dynamic disk. Boot your computer from a Linux-based bootable media and try again». I’m able to boot to the thumb drive and load Acronis, and it sees both the source and destination drives, but I can’t get past this error even if I use the «add disk» wizard and make sure the destination drive isn’t using GPT partitioning.
I’m not sure if I made some error when creating the media, or if I’m using the thumb drive wrong, or if the thumb drive can only be used on my laptop, or if I’m missing something else.
Advice would be much appreciated.

What steps are you taking when you are booting from the USB Acronis rescue media?
Are you shutting down Windows then booting the USB media?
Or are you doing a Windows Restart then selecting to boot from the USB media?
It is possible if doing a shutdown that Windows is going into a hybrid sleep state due to having Windows Fast Start enabled, which would give this type of error.
To do a full shutdown (avoiding hybrid sleep) press & hold the Shift key when clicking on Shutdown.
If you have ATI 2018 rather than an OEM version of ATI provided with your new SSD then you could take advantage of Active Cloning to perform this action without using the boot media.
Note: you should always have a full Disk backup before any cloning action.

Thanks for the reply. I was doing a complete shutdown, so I did some testing and discovered a couple things. On my earlier attempts, I had disconnected my DVD drive so that I could have both source and destination drives connected using SATA cables in hopes of better transfer speeds and less chance of the destination drive not being recognized. As a test, I reconnected my DVD drive and inserted the Acronis install disk, and then connected my destination drive to a USB port using a USB-to-SATA adapter. Then I booted to the Acronis disk, launched ATI and then I was able to successfully clone the drive. So that seems to indicate that the computer itself and the source and destination drives were all compatible with cloning and seems to isolate the issue to the USB Universal restore media. I tested it on a few different computers and discovered that I always get the «can’t lock dynamic disk» error if I use the USB drive, but I’m successful in cloning if I use the Acronis DVD.
The only two forum articles I’ve located that are similar to my symptoms indicate that either the USB drive may be in trial mode, or that the source and destinations disks may be incompatible, with one being basic and the other being GPT. I’ve ruled out incompatible drives, since it works fine by using the Acronis install disk, but I can’t say for certain if the USB universal restore media may be in trial mode. I’m not sure how to check that.
Also, in launching Acronis from the USB drive, I had booted to UEFI mode, if that makes any difference. I’m not certain if launching in legacy mode would have made any difference? Just throwing out ideas.
I’d like to generate a USB drive that could be used for cloning, but the one I have doesn’t seem to work. Some computers I work on do not have a DVD drive, so it’s not always an option for me to boot to the DVD in order to clone drives, and I failed when trying to clone the install DVD to a USB drive.
Any advice on this matter would be appreciated.

Задача:
Установить Windows 1078 на ноутбук нетбук с SSD
Проблема:
Отсутствие встроенного и внешнего CDDVD – привода. (В случае если есть внешний привод, то проблема снимается. Простыми словами: Не мудохайтесь с флешкой, ставьте с привода.) Конечно есть тот случай когда все нормально проходит. Вы просто создаете загрузочную флешку с помощью rufus Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool. Но когда вы доходите до пункта разметки диска, вы наблюдаете такое сообщение:
Программе установки не удалось создать новый или найти существующий системный раздел.
Способы решения:
Если все способы выше вам не помогли то вы один из нас. Итак, Вы дошли до данной ошибки.
4. Далее вынимаем USB-флешку и нажимаем на стрелку “Назад”. (Верхний левый угол окна) До тех пор, пока не вернемся к окну выбора редакции ОС Лицензионному соглашению. (В случае OEM-образа): 
4.1 Теперь, жмем «Далее» и наблюдаем появление следующей ошибки. 
4.2 Ничего страшного, так и должно быть. Жмем «ОК» и нас выбрасывает обратно в главное меню установщика: 
4.3 Вставляем флешку обратно, и снова по порядку проходим все стадии начала установки, доходя до выбора раздела диска. Выбираем нужный, жмем «Далее» и о, чудо! — Видим, что установка пошла:

Нам, как и Вам тоже не помогли пункты указанные выше. Тут варианта два сложный в консоли и попроще с вполне дружелюбным интерфейсом.

Все что указано в первом варианте, можно сделать с помощью Live-CDUSB.

Добрый день, уважаемые коллеги.
Неожиданно возникла трабла при использовании Acronis True Image 2018, прошу оказать помощь в ее разрешении.
Дано:
Я выполнял вполне тривиальную задачу по переносу операционной системы ноутбука с HDD на SSD.
Создал загрузочную флешку Acronis’ a, загрузился c нее, снял полный образ HDD.
Далее запустил процедуру восстановления. На этапе выбора источника выбрал все разделы, которые были в образе.
И вот дальше у меня возникла проблема. При выборе destination (диска приемника), SSD на который я собственно хочу развернуть образ становится неактивным, я не могу его выбрать. Для выбора доступны только другие мои диски объемом более 1 TB.
Раньше я уже разворачивал образы с большего по объему HDD на меньший SSD и все было ровно, а сейчас не могу сообразить что не так.

Всего занято 112 гб.
Основной

Western Digital Green на 256GB
Нераспределённый

Подключен через USB док-станцию.
Для выбора доступны только другие мои диски объемом более 1 TB.
Логично, учитывая что у вас образ диска размером 1тб.
Раньше я уже разворачивал образы с большего по объему HDD на меньший SSD и все было ровно, а сейчас не могу сообразить что не так.
Вы вероятно делали это не через файл образа, а прямое клонирование — тогда акронис умеет уменьшить разделы в соответствии с целевым диском. А вот если у вас готовый образ — увы.

Загружаетесь в исходную систему, и с помощью акрониса, или штатного менеджера дисков сжимаете разделы.
Появлялась ошибка «Невозможно заблокировать динамический диск. «
Он не умеет работать с динамическими дисками.
Проверка chkdsk выявила около 100 ошибок.
Как клонировать в программе Acronis True Image 2015 операционную систему Windows 7, 8, 8.1 с обычного жёсткого диска на твердотельный накопитель SSD (объём накопителей разный)
Диск 1. Твердотельный накопитель SSD, при клонировании вся информация на нём будет удалена
Автоматический (рекомендуется) и Далее
Выделяем левой мышью Исходный диск (диск, с которого нужно клонировать операционную систему Win 8.1), в нашем случае простой жёсткий Диск 3 MAXTOR STM 3250310AS и жмём Далее.
Выделяем левой мышью Целевой диск (диск, на который нужно клонировать операционную систему Win 8.1), в нашем случае твердотельный накопитель SSD Silicon Power и Далее
Acronis выводит предупреждение «Выбранный целевой жёсткий диск содержит разделы на которых могут храниться данные. Для подтверждения удаления всех разделов на целевом жёстком диске нажмите ОК». Жмём ОК и Далее.
В данном окне программа Acronis True Image 15 нам говорит, что для клонирования информации с Исходного диска на Целевой нам нужно на Исходном диске исключить 23, 72 ГБ файлов. Исключать файлы нельзя с первого раздела (Зарезервировано системой), так как там находятся файлы загрузки Windows 8.1. Также нежелательно исключать файлы с диска с установленной Windows 8.1. Диску с установленной операционной системой Windows 8.1 здесь присвоена буква (D:), если нажать на неё левой мышью, то откроются файлы операционной системы.
Значит исключать файлы мы будем с диска (E:).
Внимание : Друзья, Вы можете просто исключить из клонирования весь этот диск (E:), в результате на твердотельный накопитель будет клонирован Диск C: (Зарезервировано системой) содержащий файлы загрузки операционной системы и ещё диск (D:) содержащий файлы Windows 8.1, но Вы можете выбрать вариант посложнее. Раскроем диск (E:) и выберем на нём ненужный файл или папку. К примеру, на этом диске мне давно мозолит глаза виртуальный жёсткий диск NewVirtualDisk1.vdi, он мне давно не нужен и объём у него около 50 ГБ, давайте исключим из клонирования его, отмечаем этот виртуальный диск галочкой. Программа Acronis True Image 15 начинает заново просчёт пространства для клонирования.
Как видите, после исключения файла, у нас осталось ещё 30 ГБ свободного места. Нажмём Далее
Если сейчас нажать Приступить, то начнётся процесс клонирования точно так, как показано в этом окне.
До — то, что имеется на твердотельном накопителе сейчас и всё это будет удалено.
После — то, что будет на SSD после клонирования, то есть два маленьких раздела.
Хочу сказать, что лично мне такое положение вещей не нужно. Мне нужен на SSD диск скрытый раздел (Зарезервировано системой) содержащий файлы загрузки операционной системы и ещё диск (D:) содержащий файлы самой Windows 8.1
Поэтому я вернусь в окно Исключение файлов и отмечу галочкой весь диск (E:). Acronis True Image 15 начинает заново просчёт пространства для клонирования.
Друзья, обратите внимание на диск (E:), он всё рано будет создан, так как это операция клонирования накопителей, но диск (E:) будет абсолютно пустой. После клонирования мы его просто удалим в Управлении дисками, а образующееся нераспределённое пространство присоединим к диску C:, вот и всё.
Приступить. Начинается процесс клонирования.
Операция «Клонирование диска» успешно завершена.
Перезагружаем компьютер и входим в загрузочное меню, выбираем для загрузки твердотельный накопитель SSD и загружаемся с него.
Клонированная Windows 8.1 прекрасно загружается. Активация с Windows не слетела. Идём в Управление дисками и видим такую картину.
С разделов на простом жёстком диске слетели буквы дисков, но их можно просто присвоить и всё.
На твердотельном накопителе SSD как и задумывали при клонировании имеется три раздела. Первый с файлами загрузки операционной системы. Второй диск C: с клонированной Windows 8.1. Третий диск D: совсем пустой.
Удаляем диск D: и присоединяем нераспределённое пространство к диску C:.
