This issue has been happening for a long time. I’ve had to update but the update failed again and again.
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Click the gear icon at the bottom left
2.Click «Restart to update. »
3.VSCode closes itself, and the small window with text «Updating VS Code» appears
4.Following prompt appears
Once I click «确定»(OK)， after a short while, this prompt appears.

I had a similar issue. The reason is because the installer thinks your code.exe is installed in
«C:\Users \AppData\Local\Programs\Microsoft VS Code\Code.exe» but mine was installed in C:\VisualStudioCode\Code.exe
So I had to update all my registry entries that pointed to the wrong location to fix this.
Is there an easier way to set the install location for code.exe so the updater knows where to look?

@SE2017-Hugh Please change the setting «update.enableWindowsBackgroundUpdates»: false to disable background updates. You’ll still have updates, just not running in the background.

I manually initiated an update to the latest version of VS code using the cog wheel menu.
It started using the new background updater and seemed to work fine.
I clicked on the prompt to restart VS Code
I received an error Saying «Failed to install VS Code update. Please download and reinstall VS Code.»
I clicked through the error and the vs code icon on my task bar was now the broken image icon
I clicked on the icon and I got the Windows error saying the program was no longer there and it seemed like vs code was essentially uninstalled.
Reinstalling from the website worked fine.
Note that I’m submitting this issue using the latest downloaded version from the website so the error would have occurred on 1.22.1 or 1.22.0
