В среду власти предъявили Лонгу обвинения в убийстве. На допросе в полиции он признался в совершении убийств. По словам Лонга, он устроил кровопролитие не на почве расовой ненависти, а в результате возникшей у него «сексуальной зависимости».

В Окленде назревает крупный конфликт на расовой почве
Для граждан Соединенных Штатов 2020 год выдался весьма непростым. На протяжении семи месяцев страна была охвачена волной массовых протестов. Скандалы буквально захлестнули политическую сферу, обстановка в которой характеризовалась проведением одних из самых ожесточенных президентских выборов в истории США.
Отдельный вклад в осложнение государственной внутриполитической обстановки внесла пандемия новой коронавирусной инфекции COVID-19, которая фактически парализовала Америку. Наружу вышли значительные системные проблемы, требующие скорейшего решения: недофинансирование больниц, слабость инфраструктуры в сельской местности и бедных районах, неуклюжесть законодательства в вопросах выдачи экономической помощи, отсутствие у граждан медицинской страховки.
Однако одним из наиболее опасных последствий коронавируса стала понемногу набирающая обороты «культурная война» и «расовая вражда» между представителями этнических меньшинств, проживающих на территории США.
Редакция Telegram-канала «Американскiй Номеръ» разбиралась, чем могут закончиться продолжающиеся грабежи и нападения на американских азиатов в Окленде.
Трамп разжигает расовую вражду
С момента появления первых заболевших в Соединенных Штатах бывший президент Дональд Трамп неоднократно на официальном уровне заявлял, что в полной мере возлагает ответственность за появление COVID-19 на власти Китая. В ходе одного из своих предвыборных выступлений в Аризоне Трамп даже предложил называть вирус «кунг-флю» или «Ухань».
Подобное поведение бывшего лидера США спровоцировало растущую неприязнь к американцам китайского происхождения.
Представители правоохранительных органов США сообщили, что в период с 31 января по 18 февраля в одном из наиболее крупных городов Калифорнии, Окленде, произошло не менее двух десятков насильственных неспровоцированных нападений на выходцев из Азии и американцев азиатского происхождения.
Нападения в Окленде
В качестве подтверждения оглашенной информации полиция Окленда 31 января опубликовала серию видеороликов, в одном из которых некий чернокожий мужчина сильно толкнул трех ничего не подозревающих людей азиатского происхождения в районе Чайнатаун. В результате нападения пострадали двое пожилых мужчин и одна женщина.

#StopAsianHate: Everything to know about the movement, and how to show your support
You’ve likely seen the hashtag #StopAsianHate circling on social media, but do you know why the campaign is trending, or what events originally sparked it going viral?
Six Asian women were murdered on Tuesday during mass shootings in Atlanta. The shootings took place at massage parlours across the city.
21-year-old Robert Aaron Long has been arrested in connection with the shootings, and while the motive isn’t yet confirmed, it took place at businesses with a high percentage of Asian staff members and killed eight women, six of whom were Asian. The Sheriff reporting on the arrest refused to confirm it as a hate crime, despite the law saying if a crime is motivated by gender or race, it qualifies.
This isn’t a one off. Anti-Asian hate crimes, violence and murders have been happening globally, and are still happening.
This is not ok. Racial hatred is never ok. But you know that, and that doesn’t implement change.
Here at Marie Claire UK, we believe it’s time to use that knowledge. To use our platforms to call out racial hatred, to actively stand with those targeted, and to shout loudly so change has to happen. We will keep up the pressure, and we will advocate for change—until change happens.
What is the #StopAsianHate movement?
In short, a response to the hatred Asian people are currently facing. The hashtag is being used globally to show support and solidarity with the Asian community.
Many victims, particularly the elderly, are being attacked in supermarkets and on the street. Heartbreaking videos are circling on social media showing elderly Asian victims sobbing after experiencing vicious hate crimes.
Rise in such hate crime seems to have spiked since the beginning of the pandemic, although exactly why remains unclear. Some believe it’s because COVID-19 originated from China.
What is clear is that these humans are being targeted, and both verbally and physically abused.

According to stats from Stop AAPI Hate, from March to December 2020, 126 incidents were reported against Asian Americans over 60 years old. Plus, researchers at the Centre for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University found a 149% increase in these crimes compared to 2019, it’s been reported.
If you’re wondering why Asian elders are being targeted, Jennifer Chen offers an explanation for Oprah magazine. “They’re easy targets; most don’t speak English. In New York City alone, 1 in 3 Asian seniors live in a limited English-speaking household, can’t defend themselves, and likely won’t report what happened,” she shares.
This week 8 people, including 6 Asian-American women, were murdered in Atlanta.
It’s the latest horrifying incident of anti-Asian racism in the US. In the UK, hate crimes against East & Southeast Asians are up 300% during the pandemic.

“Anger, like pressure cooker steam, needs an outlet, but healthy means of expression may include releasing it through sport, channelling it through creative pursuits, or even a primal scream. Taking it out on another person who you might misguidedly see as a ‘representative target’ is abhorrent,” explains doctor Audrey Tang, a chartered psychologist and author of The Leader’s Guide to Resilience.
“As a British born Chinese-Malay of Perenakan heritage, the report of the Singaporean Jonathan Mok being attacked on Oxford Street in February 2020 was the start of my own concerns for safety,” she explains.
Sadly, she goes on to say they haven’t been eased throughout the year. “Now, we’re seeing abhorrent levels of hate crime in America. I’ve also been filled with sadness reading reports about East and SE Asian doctors being subject to abuse when they’re simply trying to do their very best for all.”
Sharn Khaira, business and mindset mentor at AFE Collective, agrees. “This movement has united people from a variety of backgrounds to come together and stand as one as they voice their concerns. We’re letting the world know that this is not ok. It must stop, before more innocent lives are lost,” she emphasises.
Calls to #StopAsianHate Take Over Social Media
The fashion industry, Hollywood, and everyday citizens are calling for an end to discriminatory hate crimes.
Celebrities, creatives, and members of the fashion industry are speaking out to raise awareness about the recent uptick in hate crimes targeting the Asian community in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Using the hashtag #StopAsianHate, social media users are sharing their own experiences with racism or calling on their followers to speak up and stand up for those who are affected by and vulnerable to racist violence, especially the elderly.
In the past month or so, there have been troubling reports of violence against Asian seniors in the United States. In January, 84-year-old Vicha Ratanapakdee was attacked by a young man in San Francisco and died from injuries, according to The San Francisco Chronicle. In Oakland’s Chinatown neighborhood, there have been more than 20 assaults over the past two weeks, the city’s Chamber of Commerce president, Carl Chan, told The New York Times. Earlier this month, 61-year-old Noel Quintana was slashed in the face with a box cutter on the subway in New York. Earlier this week, a 52-year-old woman was attacked outside of a New York City bakery, leading her to get 10 stitches in her head. There are many other incidents not documented as well.
Olivia Munn, Daniel Dae Kim and Daniel Wu, Chrissy Teigen, and more have spoken out about the recent crimes. In the fashion space, advocates calling to #StopAsianHate include designer Prabal Gurung, Oscar de la Renta and Monse creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, author and Instagram Head of Fashion Partnerships Eva Chen, Allure Editor-in-Chief Michelle Lee, journalist Susie Lau, fashion bloggers Chriselle Lim and Tina Leung.
Fashion designer Phillip Lim shared in a video that he learned some of his own friends and colleagues were «bullied, harassed, attacked in their neighborhoods within these past several weeks.» He also expressed his concern over what seems like lacking mainstream media coverage over such incidents.
«Besides a few, my friends, colleagues, and adjacent communities barely whisper about it, and have yet to ask how we are doing,» he said. «It feels as if we do not really matter or exist.»
While speaking to Harper’s BAZAAR‘s editor in chief, Samira Nasr, Wednesday, Lim noted that there is no «simple solution» to the xenophobic attacks aimed at the Asian community. «The point is education, awareness,» he said. «The other point is going back to the root of it all. And the third thing is understanding that those who hurt have been hurt, and this is perpetual. And if we snap back and take reactionary actions, what is the end game of that?»
The Queens Chronicle reported that, according to NYPD data, anti-Asian hate crimes have risen by 1,900 percent in the past year. Stop AAPI Hate, a coalition aimed at addressing discrimination against the Asian community amid the pandemic, reported that it has received more than 2,808 firsthand accounts of anti-Asian hate from 47 states and Washington, D.C., from March 19 to December 31 last year. More than 7 percent of those incidents involved Asian-Americans aged over 60 years old. The wave of hate crimes and racist remarks seem to stem from former president Donald Trump’s xenophobic messaging, calling COVID-19 the «Chinese virus» or «kung flu» because the initial outbreaks were first identified in Wuhan, China.
Many of the social media users, with platforms big and small, have been sharing bright yellow «Stop Asian Hate» infographics to enlighten their followers about the overlooked crimes and ways to stand in solidarity. The images were created by artist Steffi Lynn, who worked with Eva Chen to create the graphics based on data from Stop AAPI Hate and the NYPD statistics reported by the Queens Chronicle. There was a planned rollout to post the pieces with a handful of allies on Tuesday morning, Lynn tells BAZAAR.com. «Shortly after I asked people to share, repost, and tag others, it started gaining traction.»
The main goal for Lynn, who was born in Austin and now lives in Brooklyn, was «to raise awareness that this is happening all over the country.» She adds, «The hope is to unite our community and fight anti-Asian hate crimes and protect our elders. The racism has always existed, but the pandemic has provided new avenues to misplace anger in hateful ways against minorities and it’s not okay. It is time to stop Asian hate.»
Cynthia Choi, one of the co-founders of Stop AAPI Hate and co-director of Chinese for Affirmative Action, shared some actionable steps with BAZAAR on ways people can help.

SOCIAL media was engulfed with «Stop Asian Hate» messages the morning of March 17, after the bloody rampage against the Asian community in Atlanta.
Why is Stop Asian Hate trending?
«Stop Asian Hate» began trending on social media following the bloody attack on Asian spa in Atlanta on March 16 carried out by Aaron Long, 21.
Long was arrested on the night of March 16 after leading cops on a three hour car chase, Cherokee County Sheriff’s spokesperson Howard J Baker said.
The Cherokee County reportedly revealed that interviews with Long did not indicate that the shooting was racially motivated or related to hate crimes.
Long did not target the victims due to their ethnicity, rather that he chose locations that he «knew specifically», according to Channel 2.
The FBI are now assisting the investigation into the shooting spree, that saw six Asian women shot dead.
Of the eight dead, seven were women and one a man, according to officials.
South Korea has since confirmed that four of the victims were of Korean descent.
Further details have not yet been released on the victims, but Atlanta Police Chief Rodney N. Bryant confirmed the majority were female and Asian.
What are people on social media saying?
The heartless attack caused folks on social media to stand in solidarity for the Asian community.
Andy Kim, the congressman of New Jersey’s 3rd congressional district, tweeted, «There was a mass shooting in America last night. Sadly that is not uncommon. Many of the victims were AAPI.
«Tragedy sits at the intersection of multiple broken parts of out society. To honor victims and save lives, we must make progress across all. #StopAsianHate.»
The Georgia Working Families Party tweeted, «Our hearts are with the victims of the shootings in Georgia, their loved ones and the AAPI community.
«We need to reckon with and do all we can to end violent racism targeting Asian Americans, violence against women, and the white supremacy & misogyny that fuels it. #StopAsianHate.»
Another supporter tweeted, «Good morning to everyone who is sick and tired of hatred and violence directed at people of color, like our Asian sisters and brothers who were murdered in Atlanta. #StopAsianHate.»
NBA superstar LeBron James wrote, «My condolences goes out to the families of all the victims and the entire Asian community tonight on what transpired in Atlanta at the Aromatherapy Spa.
«Coward a** young man!! Just senseless and tragic. » he added.
Rihanna added her voice to those who condemned hate directed towards Asians.
She tweeted “what happened yesterday in Atlanta was brutal, tragic & is certainly not an isolated incident by any means.
“AAPI hate has been rampantly perpetuated & it’s disgusting! I’m heartbroken for the Asian community & my heart is with the loved ones of those we lost. The hate must stop.”
Hillary Clinton tweeted: ’m sending prayers today to the families of the people killed and those injured in Atlanta’s horrific attacks.
«The surge in violence against Asian Americans over the last year is a growing crisis. We need action from our leaders and within our communities to stop the hate.
What happened in Atlanta
The first shooting occurred at a Cherokee County massage parlor about 30 miles northwest of Atlanta before two other spas across the street from each other in northeast Atlanta were targeted.
Two people died at the scene. A further three were transported to hospital, were another two succumbed to their injuries.
Less than an hour later, police responded to a call off a «robbery in progress» at Gold Spa, in northeast Atlanta.
Three women were shot dead in the appalling attack.
The gunman then headed to another spa situated just across the street, the Aromatherapy Spa, where officers found another woman deceased.
Long was taken into custody «without incident» and was being held at the Crisp County jail.
The suspect is heading back to Cherokee County for a court hearing regarding the slaughter.
President Joe Biden tweeted: «Jill and I are keeping everyone impacted by the shootings in Atlanta in our prayers.
«We don’t yet know the motive, but what we do know is that the Asian-American community is feeling enormous pain tonight.
